Choosing jewelry which flatters you isn’t difficult when you understand certain principles. You select clothes which suit your body type. In the same way, you need to take your height, weight and bone structure into consideration when buying jewelry. The effect of a well-chosen outfit can be spoiled with the wrong jewelry. Here are some body type guidelines for women:

Petite Women
Necklaces – collar-length or longer
necklaces suit petite women. The figure can be ‘elongated’ with
“V”-shaped necklace styles and ones that fall below the breast but above
the waist. For the full-figured, longer styles draw the eye downward,
elongating height. Pieces with larger stones and/or thicker chains are
also more suitable than small, delicate pieces.
Bracelets – narrow bands and bangles look good on petite women. Wearing several narrow bangles rather than one wide one is more proportionate to the overall size of small women.
Earrings - styles that sweep upward, pulling the viewer’s eye up, flatter petite women. Upswept styles, like seashells or wings, make short women look taller. Geometric jewelry shapes suit full-figured women who are petite.
Rings
– people ‘talk’ with their hands, so selecting the
right jewelry for the hand is just as important as for other areas of
the body. Rings should be selected according to the size and shape of
the finger. Hands with short fingers look best with narrow bands or
settings that remain within the knuckle. The setting or stone that
extends past the knuckle only accentuates the hand’s shortness and makes
it look less elegant. Oval or marquise shape stones are good choices
for short fingers because they elongate the hand. Round solitaire
settings also work because of their simplicity. Large rings overpower
the short hand so, if you’d like to wear one, opt for a dome shape of a
high setting.
Women of Average Height
Necklaces – any length is fine.
Full-figured women, however, should avoid necklaces which rest on the
breastline.
Bracelets – for women of average height, wide bracelets are more in proportion than very narrow ones.
Earrings – almost anything goes. Earrings should be selected to suit face shape and hair styles.
Rings
– the length of the fingers is the determining factor when selecting rings. The guidelines for tall women as
well as petite women apply to women of average height as well. Rings
should be selected in proportion to the size of the hand.
Tall Women
Necklaces – tall women can wear almost any
necklace length. Necklaces made of stones, beads or pearls of the same
size are especially flattering. Chokers flatter thin, tall women as they
cut the line of the neck and de-emphasize height.
Bracelets – designs which are very fine and delicate may seem out of proportion. They make long arms look gangly,Tall woman who are full-figured should wear a couple of wide bracelets or several thin bracelets together
Earrings – Long dangling earrings are good choices for tall women. As there is plenty of space between the ear lobe and shoulder, tiny button earrings may look lost. Otherwise, any shape of earrings are fine.
Rings – women with long fingers, like tall women, can handle almost any ring style. For those with very thin, long-fingers, oval or round settings help to soften the look. Also, wider bands are more flattering than thin ones.
