How quickly the year goes by! The festive and holiday season is just around the corner, and social events will start to fill up the calendar. It will soon be time to deck the halls and trim the tree. Have you ever noticed how some women go overboard and make the mistake of decking the moll and becoming the Christmas tree? Dressing for parties and special occasions is an art, as the following tips will show.
Party dressing basically plays with one of two strategies: either let the dress star, or let a special piece of jewellery star. If you would like your outfit to be the centre of attention, simple accessories are best. Keep the flashy jewellery at home. If you want your jewellery to star, a simple dress will help your jewellery stand out. The outfit then becomes a background for the jewellery, much like a picture frame. Little black dresses really set the stage for stunning jewellery, but other colours can work just as well, provided the colour of the outfit complements the jewellery.
A statement necklace or brooch is an easy way to use jewellery as a focal point, although bracelets or rings may also achieve this effect. Decide on which jewellery piece you would like to be the centre of attention. If you’re wearing other items of jewellery, keep them simple so that your chosen focal piece really stands out. A piece of jewellery for creating a statement or a focal point need not be made of precious metals or gems. Costume jewellery can serve this function just as well.
Even if you have the proportions for it, avoid wearing two or more large pieces of jewellery at the same time. That would be an overkill. If you’ve opted to wear a dramatic necklace, for instance, keep other items of jewellery subtle and delicate. Balance is the key.
It isn’t necessary to adorn ears, neck, chest, wrist and fingers all at once. To make an impact tastefully, less is really more. A bracelet pairs well with earrings, while a ring goes with a necklace.
Remember to select jewellery which is in proportion to your body type, face type and hairstyle. I wrote in detail about this subject in recent posts titled "Choosing Jewelry Which Flatters You"and “The Right Jewelry For Your Face Shape & Hairstyle”.
With careful planning, you can combine silver and gold jewellery. They should match the colour of your outfit, eye colour and hair. If you’re wearing a dark-coloured dress, silver and gold chains can liven it up. However, wearing gold and silver separately on your body – such as a gold necklace with a silver bracelet – may look odd.
Keep these rules in mind when you dress for your next party, and you’ll be a knockout!
