While you should always buy jewelry that you like, knowing how to choose jewelry which complements your face shape and hairstyle can help you enhance your best features, while downplaying flaws. Basically, there are four types of face shapes: oval, round, heart-shaped and rectangular or angular. Determine your face shape, and keep in mind certain principles when selecting jewelry to wear. Full-figured women should go for longer styles which draw the eye downward, creating more ‘height’. Necklaces with larger stones and/or thicker chains work better than small, delicate pieces.
The Rectangular Face
This face has more length than width and it has discernible angles. The width of the face at the forehead is the same as the chin. With the right jewelry, the illusion of width can be created and the length of the face can be minimized.
Earrings – The angles in square, rectangular, or very thin faces can be softened with round buttons and hoops. Wide styles play down the length of a rectangular face.
Necklaces– The rectangular face needs jewelry that downplays its length and adds width. Chokers and U-shaped necklaces around 16″ or 18″ long are flattering because they help break up the angles and reduce the length of the face. A high choker reduces the length of the face, which is particularly desirable if the neck is too long.
The Heart-Shape Face
Like a triangle, the heart-shaped face is wide at the forehead and cheeks, then narrows sharply to a point at the chin. Jewelry which adds width to the chin to draw the eye away from the point is a good choice. Styles with wide bottoms soften the look of a pointed chin.
Earrings – styles that are wider at the bottom than the top are preferable. Dangling earrings that form a triangle particularly flatter.
Necklaces – Chokers and U-shaped necklaces are smart choices as they help soften the sharp chin of a triangular or heart-shaped face.
Hairstyles
If you have an average frame, earring choices are limited only by hairstyle and facial structure. For those with short-cut hair, massive earrings will look out of balance. This is also true if you have a small face with fine features. If you have long hair, remember that small settings will get lost, especially if your hair is dark. However, if you wear your hair piled up, long drop or dangling earrings look absolutely fabulous. The sway of dangling earrings and the sparkle of gemstones will draw attention to your face.
